This page is dedicated to Slowtowne officially  known (though not really known at all) as Winslow.  We hope to be able to use this page to publish world-wide the rich story of this unique, small, often overlooked town that we've decided to call home. Everyone should stop by for a visit. You'll never forget it.

Geographically, Winslow is located at 35°47′55″N, 94°7′53″W (35.798546, -94.131381).  Which really only matters I guess if you're charting us by GPS.

The easiest way to find us is about half way between Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Fayetteville, Arkansas on Interstate 540.

Actually, if you go there it's just an exit - we're about 6 miles east of there. But it's worth the beautiful drive in the Ozarks!  Be careful on that road - long and winding and at the right time of year - the deer will hit your car!

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛), all land (But we've done some diggin' and it's all rock!).  There are several creeks running through the hills here, but the closest substantial water is Lake Ft. Smith/Lake Shepherd Springs that are currently under construction as the two lakes are being combined into one huge lake.  This excellent water recreation facility will only be about 15 miles from us when it's all completed.  Mountains & and a beautiful lake.  It's been a fascinating process watching the Corps of Engineering combine these two existing lakes and not wipe out existing towns along their way!

Demographics of Winslow

As of the census of 2000, there were 399 people, 148 households, and 108 families residing in the city. The population density was 80.7/km˛ (209.3/mi˛). There were 170 housing units at an average density of 34.4/km˛ (89.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city was 91.48% White, 1.00% Black or African American, 2.01% Native American, 0.75% from other races, and 4.76% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Winslow's Statistics

Winslow is a city  in Washington County, Arkansas. It has an elevation of 1,756 feet.

The population was 399 at the 2000 census.  This is, of course, the city proper population.  The largest portion of Winslow's population live outside the city limits in what is known as the "township".  That population might edge closer to a thousand people!

Forgotten Facts:

Once known as Summit Home, Winslow honors Edward F. Winslow, the Frisco Railroad executive who brought transportation to the isolated community in 1881.

There were 148 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.18.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 105.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,306, and the median income for a family was $28,125. Males had a median income of $28,625 versus $17,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,109. About 17.5% of families and 24.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 37.3% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.

For many years, the town had its own school system. It served the city and nearby rural areas in the southern portion of Washington, County, AR. By most counts, enrollment for grades K-12 was usually in the mid-200s.

The district became part of the Greenland, AR school district in 2004 after the Arkansas Legislature passed a state law that mandated districts with less than 350 students consolidate. The high school, which actually served grades 7-12, closed at the end of the 2004-2005 school year.

The graduating class at the 2005 spring ceremony had 14 seniors. Winslow Elementary for grades K-6 was retained for a time following the high school closure. However, in Nov. 2006, the Greenland School Board voted to close that school at the end of the 2006-2007 school year after two years with an enrollment of about 90 students.

The old school building is still being used by the Winslow Library, the Friends of the Winslow Library Bookstore, The Washington County Sheriff's Office substation and a free to the community Internet cafe.

Fun Facts:

Prior to their school closing, the Winslow Squirrels had the proud distinction of being the only Squirrel Mascots in the country!

Winslow Trivia

bullet

Winslow was the first incorporated city in the United States to elect an all female city counsel and a female Mayor way back in the 1920's.  We'll have lots more on Mrs. Maud Duncan and the Petticoat Government in the near future.  Before politics, Maud was a Pharmacist.  She also ran the newspaper - quite an accomplished woman for early twentieth century.

The Bank of Winslow was the only bank in the in the state of Arkansas that paid 100 cents on the dollar when the banks failed during the great depression.
